Where

In the centre of the world
Where everyone has come to live
Noises and flashes all around me
But no-one’s there
The beating sound of water
On tin rooves and umbrellas
And the sun hides away
Behind the Westpac House
And it is dark
The ground lights up and blinds me
Concrete and glass
And yet when I look above
It is still dark

Off all known roads
There is a place I call home
Far from all known life
Full of life
The soft splashes of rain
On the soft soil
And the sun like joy
Shining through the colour filled drops
In the sky
When the sun comes to rest
All of its friends come out to play
Through the smooth velvet
They shine

The first crack of light
He was opening the door
To a troubled world

Second crack of dawn
Gonna go and make some friends
A new school again

Third crack at football
Managed to fumble again
I’ll get better soon

Fourth crack of woman
Feel nothing, pointless again
Love next time for sure

Fifth crackpot exec
Working the night shift again
Might get promoted

Sixth crack for the week
Get away from it again
Need some to relax

Seventh crack of whip
She’s left for good. Let it be
You’ve still got Michael

Eighth crack: family
Dad got cancer as well, Mum
You’ll be together

Ninth crack in my head
I open the door for Mike
Please don’t be like me

Ten cracks, unbroken
There will be days like this but
Don’t be afraid, boy
